Pride is a word that is so pervasive in our culture that it's meaning often times gets misused, abused, and flat out redefined. If you look up the word Pride and the synonyms of Pride you get a thorough understanding of what Pride is and why we should not use this word as Christians. Pride is always a negative/sinful word, but sadly our culture has rejected God and his word and the world has put a positive spin on Pride. We even celebrate the whole month of June to the tune of Pride, which is the #1 thing God hates above all things. Pride is ultimately mankind doing as they wish a apart from what God has said; Pride says, we are our own authority on all things, we don't need Jesus. Ask this one question - "What have the effects of our pride brought upon our culture/world?"
The first act of rebellion which happened in heaven was with Lucifer; his Pride is ultimately what plunged all the world into sin (all sin finds it's roots in PRIDE). Before Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden was Lucifer rebelling against the Lord. Lucifer's rebellion brought his deception to Adam and Eve "Did God really Say? Eve was deceived and she then deceived Adam and we see the obvious results of that one choice to believe a lie from the Father of lies Satan. Below is a list of scriptures laying out what Pride is and the dangers thereof.
Scripture verses on Pride: More scripture to come soon!
1. Ezekiel 28:12b-17 - "You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone - red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone, blue-green beryl, onyx, green, jasper, blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire. "You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. Your rich commerce led you to violence, and you sinned. So I banished you in disgrace from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire. Your heart was full of pride because of all your beauty. Your wisdom was corrupted by your love of splendor. So I threw you to the ground and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings." (Lucifer, created by God)
2. Isaiah 14:12-14 - "How you are fallen from heaven, O Shinning star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, 'I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God's stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods for away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High." (Fall of Lucifer because of Pride)
3. Proverbs 3:5-8 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones."
4. Proverbs 6:16-19 - "There are six things the Lord hates - no seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. (Pride is number #1 on the list and it accounts for the other 6).
